Flooding – Is my home covered from damages?

Some years, our region has plenty of snow which can lead to flooding after it has melted. The Idaho Department of Insurance reminds consumers that water damage caused by rising water, including snow melt is not covered by homeowner’s insurance.

After every flood, we hear about homeowners who did not realize they needed to protect themselves with flood insurance,” said Department Director Dean Cameron. “We urge consumers to review their coverage now and make sure they have the protection they need.”

The Department recommends homeowners discuss insuring their property with a licensed agent. Contact an Agent at AMERICAN INSURANCE at (208) 746-9646 or online here for more information about flood insurance coverage.

Flood insurance provides coverage for buildings, but contents coverage is optional. According to the NFIP, the average flood insurance policy – including building and some contents – costs about $700 per year. Flood Insurance policies typically have a 30-day waiting period.

"When flood insurance is not an option due to waiting periods or high premium cost, home owners are reminded to protect against flooding by moving snow away from buildings. Place piled snow so that rapid snow melt will drain away from buildings, " reminds John Sullivan, President of AMERICAN INSURANCE. "Also, excessive snow on the roof of any building should be cleared off. The weight of the snow can lead to collapse and melting snow can overwhelm drains and cause interior water damage," Sullivan added.

More information about flood insurance is available on the Idaho Department of Insurance website.
