Safeco Insurance customers will soon begin seeing a new name on their policies. Liberty Mutual has announced that it will be retiring the Safeco brand and transitioning to a single, unified brand under the Liberty Mutual name.

Safeco was acquired by Liberty Mutual in 2008 and has continued to operate under its original name for many years. This upcoming change reflects Liberty Mutual’s goal of streamlining its brand and delivering an even stronger, more consistent experience to better serve their customers. The Safeco name will be retired on April 25, 2026.

A NAME CHANGE ONLY: Please know that this change will not impact your coverage, your policy, or your relationship with us as your agent. Only the insurance company name on your policy will change from Safeco to Liberty Mutual. No action is needed on your part.

Your generous donations as Hometown Business Partners, employees, and individuals set a new record for our local food banks.
After Thanksgiving we collected another 1,249 lbs of food, added to prior total!

32,136 lbs.

For the 10th year, American Insurance is sponsoring the 2025 Hometown Food Drive, (M-F) November 17 – 21 to fill the shelves at our local food banks.

10 Tons for our 10th Year!

More than 80 Hometown Business Partners, their employees and the public are expected to give more than 20,000 lbs. (10-tons) of food to our local food banks in Lewiston, Clarkston and Moscow.

Federal cuts to USDA Programs plus continued inflation in food and housing costs threatens to make food insecurity a crisis! Food insecurity for the under-employed, young families, veterans, retired and disabled has never been more urgent. Food banks in Lewiston, Clarkston and Moscow report a big increase in new requests for food and shelves need to be refilled.

“This food drive has become one of the largest area drives for the foodbanks at Community Action in Lewiston, Asotin County in Clarkston, and Palouse Cares in Moscow, that desperately need to restock their shelves now,” said John Sullivan, Chairman at American Insurance.

USDA cuts to programs is deep

Steve Small, manager of the Community Action Food Bank in Lewiston (pictured right with empty shelves) said, “opening the government will not fully solve this growing food-insecurity problem. Even if SNAP (food stamps) are partially restored, the recent cuts to USDA Program funding and the elimination of the Commodity Credit Corporation program (CCC) in Idaho is creating a shortage in our food availability pipeline going forward 6-months and longer.”

Small said, “We are seeing increased new demand for food assistance, particularly among low-income seniors and younger, low-income working families.”

How can you help meet the urgent need?

It’s easy! Just stop by these local Food Store Partners - A & B Foods on 8th Street or Thain and Grocery Outlet on Thain in Lewiston, or Rick’s Family Foods on Highland in Clarkston, or the Moscow Food Co-Op in Moscow.

Get discounted pre-bagged food, available for quick pick up, to pay and go. Individuals can leave their food donation at the store for pickup there, but our Business Partner employees will take their donations to their own worksite for pick up by American Insurance agents for delivery to food banks. Other food donations and checks made payable to the food bank can be dropped off at the American Insurance offices in Lewiston and Moscow.

This year we celebrate 20 years of service in Moscow. In 2005 Remington Insurance was purchased and this became the first branch office for the agency with Shawn Sullivan as branch manager. Before moving to our current location at 604 S WA St., we were proud to call 203 E 3rd St. in downtown Moscow our first home. We are incredibly grateful to be a part of this vibrant and supportive community. For two decades, it has been our honor helping protect what matters most and supporting your pursuit of your American Dream here on the Palouse. We look forward to many more years of service, partnership, and shared success.

Summer 2025 is here, and it is getting hot! American Insurance is well into our 103rd year and there are indications that the insurance industry is starting to turn the corner from the hard insurance market of the last couple of years.

The good news is…

As of May 2025, the Insurance Companies we represent have been operating more profitably. We are seeing a cooling off on rate increases, a broader underwriting appetite, and a willingness to help us be “Open for Business!”

Hard market is cooling off…

In 2023, we sounded the alarm that a hard insurance marketplace was upon us which meant increasing premiums, stricter underwriting, reduction in types of acceptable risk classes and limited

insurance markets. This trend has begun to cool off now, as wildfire scoring, higher protection classes and property age underwriting are now standard in practice for Homes and Property.

American Insurance is here for you to provide - Choice, Value and Advocacy in reviewing your insurance pricing and coverage options. As an Independent Insurance Agency, we represent dozens of top insurance companies like, Safeco, Liberty Mutual, Progressive, Travelers, Nationwide and many more.

Policy Service requests are our highest priority!

At any point, if you need a policy review, please let us know immediately! Call us, text us at 208-518-0823 or email us at American@Am-Ins.com.

Who must call 811?

This is why you must call before digging on your property.

Homeowners are the most likely to forget to call 811 before digging on their property. Something as simple as planting shrubs, installing a fence, mailbox post, or sprinkler system can create a dangerous and costly situation.

Property owners and contractors are strictly liable if they damage underground utility lines when they dig. Buried natural gas and electrical lines could be anywhere – some just inches below the surface.

Every state, including Idaho and Washington, have laws that require you to call 811 at least two working days before you start digging. A mistake can create an expensive liability claim against you. You will want to avoid a claim against your personal or business liability insurance.

HERE IS WHAT TO DO:

First, mark your dig area with white paint or stakes for the locator service visit.

Then call 811 which will initiate a request for a locator to visit your work site to mark the ground above utility lines.

Once located, don't move or alter the marks until the lines are exposed.

Note the length of time markers remain valid. It varies by state.

Only use hand tools to expose the utility line when digging within two feet of the marked area.

Support exposed gas pipelines with secure nylon straps, wood shoring, and ropes so they don't break or rupture.

Use sand or rock-free dirt as backfill.

Property owners can call 811 requesting private locates for any non-utility owned facilities (such as underground power or gas lines to an outbuilding).

If you expose gas or electric lines that haven't been marked, or damage a line, stop excavating and call the utility immediately. They need to inspect the lines even if gas isn't leaking.

If you're building, never build decks or structures over utility pipelines or meters. Doing so runs a safety risk and prevents the utility from servicing the infrastructure. They may be able to relocate their equipment to accommodate your project, but you could be responsible for the associated costs.

GOT IT? Remember, always call 811 at least two working days before you start digging. It's the law.

Goals are the stepping-stones to achieving your dreams and we are here to help you every step of the way. At American Insurance, we are committed to helping you “protect your American dream” – the hopes and aspirations for the future. Trust us to be your partner in making your financial security resolutions a reality.

Re-evaluate your coverage:

Evaluate your current insurance coverage to ensure it aligns with your needs and budget. Review your policies to see if adjustments are necessary for a better fit.

Perhaps you can increase deductibles for premium savings, increase limits for better protection, and combine policies for additional discounts. Don't overlook the importance of regularly assessing your insurance to guarantee comprehensive protection.

Buy Life Insurance:

If you don’t have life insurance now, you should consider purchasing a policy today – it’s one of the best gifts you can give your loved ones for peace of mind and protection! As your responsibilities and financial goals increase you may need to add more low-cost term life insurance.

Know where your documents are:

Organize your important documents – birth certificate, social security info, marriage certificate, passport, banking and credit info, medical info, and legal documents like wills, deeds of trust, car titles and all insurance policies. Stay organized and let your family members know how to access this information. It eases stress on your family in case of an emergency.

Build a relationship with your insurance agent:

Insurance agent relationships are important. By working with your American Insurance agent, you can get the financial security advice you need tailored to your wants, desires and circumstances. Take the time to build a strong relationship with your agent for peace of mind.

Take advantage of preventative health benefits:

Don't forget to utilize your health insurance to access all the amazing benefits it offers, from annual physicals to free gym memberships. Taking care of your wellness now will save you time and money in the long run. Stay proactive and prioritize your health every day.

CONTACT US and schedule a review of all your insurance needs with an American Insurance agent today – auto, home, business, health and life.

AMERICAN INSURANCE invites you individually to join us and other Hometown Business Partners as we collect food this week (M-F Nov 18 – 22) for our local food banks in Lewiston, Clarkston and Moscow.

It’s easy to Partner with us! Bring a bag of non-perishable food to an American Insurance office or visit one of our Grocer Partners for discounted $15 pre-bagged food. You can leave your purchased donation bags at the store and we will pick it up and deliver it to our food banks.

INCREASED NEED: John Sullivan spoke with Steve Small at Community Action Food Bank on New 6th St in Lewiston. Steve let us know that our Hometown Food Drive is now their largest single drive and they are counting on us!

Brand new food bank clients for years prior had between 25 and 50 but when inflation hit the new averages doubled from 50 to 100 per month. More money going to rent has also pushed the uptick in numbers including a larger number of young families and elderly. Joanne Huntley, director of the Asotin County Food Bank in Clarkston and Jeremy VanHouten, VP of Palouse Cares in Moscow report similar increases in new food requests. With our help, they have been meeting those needs.

Together we make a big difference in reducing food insecurity in our communities. Thank you for caring and your generosity!

Shawn & Philip Sullivan & Staff
